Liverpool draw old foes in FA Cup

Fierce north west rivals Manchester United and Liverpool will lock horns in the FA Cup third round at Old Trafford after the draw was made on Sunday evening.

It is the only all-Premier League tie while holders Chelsea take on Championship side Ipswich Town at Stamford Bridge.

Former Manchester City manager Sven-Goran Eriksson will welcome the Citizens to current employers Leicester City and Arsenal host Leeds United in an exciting looking battle.

Elsewhere, non-league Dover have been handed a difficult away day at Huddersfield Town following early round wins over Gillingham and Aldershot and last season’s losing finalists Portsmouth travel to the winners of Brighton and FC United of Manchester.

The ties are due to be played over the weekend on January 8 and 9 at the start of next year.

Tottenham Hotpsur secured a last-gasp 2-1 victory over Premier League rivals Liverpool on Sunday evening thanks to Aaron Lennon’s late strike.

The diminutive winger finished calmly after picking up Peter Crouch’s nod down in stoppage-time.

Liverpool opened the scoring through Martin Skrtel before Jermaine Defoe missed a penalty.

Skrtel turned hero to villain as he slid into his own net after Luka Modric’s cross and Lennon was on hand to seal the victory in north London.

Meanwhile, Chelsea’s Premier League title aspirations hit the skids again as they were held to a 1-1 draw at Newcastle United.

Martin Kaymer is the new European number one after seeing out the season in style at the Dubai World Championships.

With closest rival Graeme McDowell failing to seal a top-three finish that would see him take the prize, the 25-year-old German was handed the honours on Sunday.

In the competition itself, Sweden’s Robert Karlsson landed the top prize after a tense sudden-death play-off victory over England’s Ian Poulter.

The pair went into the shoot-out after finishing on 14-under-par and disaster struck for Poulter on the second extra hole.
