NESV poised for Liverpool takeover

New England Sports Ventures claim they are in pole position to complete a takeover of Liverpool following the High Court ruling which has paved the way for the sale of the club.

Chairman Martin Broughton has revealed an emergency board meeting will take place after current co-owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett were defeated in the courts on Wednesday morning.

Hicks and Gillett failed in their attempt to block a £300million sale of the club to NESV, who are the owners of the Boston Red Sox baseball franchise.

Speaking outside the High Court, Broughton hinted that the board would now convene quickly to discuss the sale process.

Former preferred bidder Singapore billionaire Peter Lim’s return with a new and improved £320million offer for the club is also reported to be on the agenda.

However, NESV claim they have a “binding agreement” in place to purchase the Anfield club.

Meanwhile, Lim has launched a counter statement in which he has urged Broughton and the board to consider his fresh approach.

Lim, who is reported to be worth £1billion, has made a cash-only offer which trumps that of NESV and contains a promise to spend £40million on new players in the January transfer window.

Meanwhile, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has hinted at a future role with French top-flight club Paris St Germain.

Wenger, 60, coached Nancy and Monaco before taking the helm of the Gunners in 1996.

The Frenchman’s long-term future in north London has recently been the subject of some debate and Wenger himself has now suggested that a return to Ligue 1 with the capital club could be an option.

In rugby union, Saracens have persuaded three more players to agree their long-term futures to the club.

English trio Brad Barritt, Alex Goode and Andy Saull have all penned three-year contracts with the Vicarage Road-based side. The news comes in the same week that South African duo Schalk Brits and Ernst Joubert committed their futures to Saracens.

In rugby league, Harlequins have continued to bolster their squad in readiness for the 2011 season by signing the Sydney Roosters star Nick Kouparitsas on a one-year deal.

The 26-year-old Greece international also played in the NRL for Canterbury Bulldogs before moving to the Roosters in 2009 and starred in Sydney’s Grand Final appearance earlier this year.

In cricket, the ICC have found ‘no compelling evidence’ of foul play during last month’s one-day international between England and Pakistan at The Oval.

A full investigation was launched into the match, that Pakistan won by 22 runs, after it was alleged that bookmakers were aware of certain scoring patterns that had occurred during the match.
