Birmingham City defender Roger Johnson has made a storming start to the new Premier League campaign and many people are calling for the towering defender to be included in Fabio Capello’s next England squad.

With a friendly clash against a beleaguered France at Wembley on November 17 to prepare for, the Italian tactician has another opportunity to test the waters ahead of the lengthy international break over the winter.

Johnson has settled into the Midlands side’s defence with some ease after making a £5million move from Cardiff City last year.

The 27-year-old would be a latecomer on the international stage, but his sterling performances in recent times should warrant a role in the Three Lions’ set-up.

He made a name for himself at Wycombe Wanderers under John Gorman before earning a move to the Bluebirds in 2006 and he hasn’t looked back.

Whether he receives the nod from Capello remains to be seen, but we take a look at other England pretenders who may be surprise inclusions ahead of the Gallic showdown later in the month.

Andy Carroll – The powerful and controversial Newcastle United striker has impressed on the Magpies’ Premier League return and, at the age of 21, certainly has time on his hands.

A fine hat-trick against Aston Villa earlier in the season at St James’ Park and a number of bulldozing efforts have raised his stock so don’t be shocked to see him named in the upcoming squad.

Matthew Etherington – The Stoke City man has been in scintillating form this term and, with an obvious dearth of left-wing talent, the 29-year-old could offer a quick-fix solution.

Scott Parker – The calls for Parker’s admission continue to rumble on and it would certainly lift some gloom in the midfielder’s life at the moment.

Despite his fine personal efforts, he is enduring a difficult time with West Ham United still at the wrong end of the table but, if the Londoners had 11 Scott Parkers out there, they would be flying high near the top of the table.

Phil Jones – Although the 18-year-old may not win a call-up just yet, the Blackburn Rovers defender has proved to be a revelation this season.

A number of no-nonsense displays have earned him iconic status at Ewood Park and we expect him to be part of England’s future.

Jordan Henderson – Sunderland manager Steve Bruce has admitted his midfield talisman has made a remarkable rise and the energetic battler is another player who should enjoy a prosperous and glittering career.
