Dundee United winger Craig Conway has been called into the Scotland squad ahead of Wednesday’s Carling Nations Cup clash against Northern Ireland.

Conway was called up following the withdrawals of Darren Fletcher, Lee McCulloch and Graham Dorrans.

Scotland assistant manager Peter Houston believes the winger is ready to shine shine for the national side.

“He’s got pace and power and is a good crosser of the ball. He deserved it and is fit and ready,” he said.

Scotland play Northern Ireland on Wednesday in the first of three Nations Cup matches, with Wales and the Republic of Ireland opposition later in the year.

Wigan defender Gary Caldwell is doubtful with a cheekbone injury but remains in Craig Levein’s squad.

Caldwell’s younger brother Steven, and James McArthur, also of Wigan, have been called up as replacements.

Levein has yet to decide who will skipper his side for the game in Dublin in Fletcher’s absence.

Houston said: “It’s the height of the season but look at the small number of call-offs.

“Darren Fletcher never misses games so we know he must be injured.

“We’ve only got one or two this time, whereas in the past we’ve had seven or eight.”
