Murray crashes out to Wawrinka

Andy Murray crashed out of the US Open in the third round, being beaten in four sets by Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka.

The fourth seed started well and took the first set on a tie-break after recovering from an early break of serve, but then began to lose form and was overwhelmed by the powerful ground strokes of Wawrinka.

The Swiss twice recovered from a break down to take the second set on a tie-break, before powering home 6-3, 6-3 to reach the fourth round, where he will meet America’s Sam Querrey.

Manchester City midfielder James Milner is concerned that players may consider quitting England duty if they continue to have their off-field lives picked apart by the media.

He told reporters: “Every individual is different.

“I would rather be under pressure because it means that things are going in the right direction on the football field.

“But some people might turn round and say ‘I have had enough, I don’t need that’.”

Rooney has, despite earlier suggestions, flown out to Basel with the rest of the England squad for the action on Tuesday evening.

Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas has confirmed that left to him, he would have chosen to join Barcelona this summer.
