West Ham United have signed Manchester City left-back Wayne Bridge on loan until the end of the season.

The 30-year-old, who attended West Ham’s 2-1 Carling Cup win over Birmingham on Tuesday, could make his debut against Arsenal on Saturday.

“It will be great to play a part in helping keep West Ham in the Premier League,” Bridge said.

The former England defender signed for City in January 2009, but has made only three league appearances this season.

Bridge has struggled to displace Argentine Pablo Zabaleta from City’s starting line-up and has faced further competition from summer arrival Aleksandar Kolarov.

A much needed signing. He will strengthen our back 4 and give us more balance.

Bridge will add to manager Avram Grant’s defensive options after West Ham’s only specialist left-back Herita Ilunga suffered a leg injury in the 1-1 draw with Everton on 28 December.

“I am just looking forward to meeting everyone at the training ground, starting work and getting out on the pitch and playing in front of the fans,” added Bridge.

“I am glad the loan is sorted and I’m ready to play.

“I know a few of the players from England and I know the physio. I spoke to Scotty Parker and a few people and they told me what a great club it is.”
