Australia ponder changes for Adelaide Test

Australia have added Ryan Harris and Doug Bollinger to their squad for the second Ashes Test that starts in Adelaide on Friday.

The Baggy Greens have made the move after England scored 517-1 declared in their second innings of the drawn first Test in Brisbane.

Mitchell Johnson was particularly poor at the Gabba, finishing with figures of 0-170 and, when asked if the paceman would be selected for the second Test, captain Ricky Ponting would only say: “I don’t think anyone is a certainty.”

In rugby union, Leicester Tigers flanker Tom Croft faces a two-month lay-off after fracturing his right shoulder during England’s 21-11 defeat to South Africa on Saturday.

The 25-year-old is expected to miss Leicester’s next two games against London Irish and Perpignan but there are hopes that he will have recovered from the injury in time to play in England’s Six Nations opener against Wales on 4 February.

Croft picked up the injury after 22 minutes of the Twickenham game but will only be given a full timescale on his recovery when he has seen a specialist.

Meanwhile, Leicester fly-half Toby Flood and Northampton wing Chris Ashton have both recovered from blows to the head they sustained during the game, while Sale fly-half Charlie Hodgson suffered a bruised foot and will undergo an assessment when he returns to his club.

In football, Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson fears that Jamie Carragher dislocated his shoulder during the defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

The veteran defender had to be replaced in the closing stages of the White Hart Lane clash and looks set to be sidelined for up to four weeks.

Meanwhile, Spurs’ Netherlands international Rafael van der Vaart could be sidelined for a month after suffering a hamstring injury in the same game.

The influential midfielder had to be substituted after just 12 minutes of the action at White Hart Lane. Younes Kaboul also picked up a hip injury in the same game.

Finally, an agreement has been reached to sell League One side Sheffield Wednesday to Milan Mandaric for £1.

The former Portsmouth and Leicester City supremo will have to pay off the club’s £10million debts though after an agreement was finalised between the Owls and UK Football Investments, a company owned by the trustees of the Milan Mandaric 2008 Revocable Trust.

Mandaric will be chairman of a three-man board comprising current chairman Howard Wilkinson and chief executive and director Nick Parker.
