The England and Wales Cricket Board has applied for permission to call up Chris Tremlett to the World Cup squad to replace injured bowler Stuart Broad.

He was ruled out of the tournament on Tuesday after straining his side in England’s win over South Africa.

Tremlett’s addition to the squad will need the approval of the International Cricket Council.

He was already with the squad as a standby player and would be a like-for-like replacement for Broad.

If Tremlett’s inclusion is approved, it would make him England’s second replacement of the week, after Eoin Morgan came in for injured batsman Kevin Pietersen.

Surrey bowler Tremlett was part of England’s successful Ashes side in Australia this winter, when he returned to the Test arena over three years since his last previous appearance.
