Liverpool are set for a fresh takeover after confirming that a deal has been reached with the owners of the Boston Red Sox baseball team.

Despite opposition from current American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett, chairman Martin Broughton believes New England Sports Ventures (NESV), the parent company of the Major League Baseball franchise, could be confirmed as the new Anfield owners within a week.

NESV are reported to have agreed to pay £300million for the club which Hicks and Gillett put up for sale in April.

Steve McClaren could be in line for a sensational return as England manager, according to the Football Association’s director of football development Trevor Brooking.

Brooking has admitted that McClaren would be considered for the post should his club management career continue to flourish.
