Colin Montgomerie has backed Jose Maria Olazabal to succeed him as Ryder Cup captain after confirming he has no plans to continue in the role following Europe’s victory at Celtic Manor.

Montgomerie proclaimed Europe’s 14.5-13.5 victory over the United States as the ‘greatest moment of his career’ before revealing he would not seek re-election to the role for the next matches at Medinah Country Club, near Chicago, in 2012.

Instead he hinted the job should go to the Spaniard, who was a late appointment as of his assistants in Wales.

“I will not be doing this again,” said Montgomerie. “I think it’s only right that it should be shared around.

“We have a number of fantastic vice-captains, plus Olazabal, and one of those five, I’m sure will be your next Ryder Cup captain.”

Bolton Wanderers striker Kevin Davies has spoken of his pride at being named in the latest England squad.

Davies, 33, is hoping to win his first international cap in next week’s Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro at Wembley after being named in Fabio Capello’s 23-man squad.

“It’s a really proud moment for me and my family,” he told the club’s official website after earlier admitting he thought the call-up was a prank.

“I’ve just got to go along and enjoy the experience of being involved with the international team and if I get the chance to play then I will do my best to impress.”

Liverpool striker Fernando Torres is an early injury doubt ahead of a massive Merseyside derby against Everton on October 17.

Torres limped out of Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to Blackpool with a fresh adductor muscle problem.

Wolves midfielder Karl Henry has promised to learn his lesson after apologising for his horror tackle on Wigan Athletic’s Jordi Gomez.

Henry, who was already under the spotlight after his tackle broke the leg of Fulham’s Bobby Zamora last month, was sent off just 11 minutes into Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at the DW Stadium.

Australia captain Ricky Ponting has admitted his side were outplayed as they fell to a first Test defeat against India in Mohali.

The sportsbook slight favourite hosts survived a late onslaught to land an exhilarating one wicket victory as VVS Laxman’s knock of 73 aided their cause as they reached the 216 needed in dramatic style.

“Full credit to India for fighting out the win the way they did today,” said Ponting. “They outplayed us, we weren’t quite good enough to get across the line, but obviously we can take a lot of good, positive signs out of the game.”

In tennis, Andy Murray eased into the second round of the China Open after a straight-sets victory over Paul-Henri Mathieu.

The British number one was a resounding 6-2 6-3 winner over the French qualifier.

He will now face either Kazakhstan’s Andrey Golubev or Albert Montanes of Spain in the second round.
