Spurs face tough Inter task

Manchester United take on Bursaspor, but all eyes will be on how Tottenham fare when they take on reigning European champions Internazionale on Wednesday evening.

Matchday three of the Champions League continues with ties from opposite ends of the interest spectrum as far as neutrals are concerned.

United, who are fourth favourites in the online betting markets to be crowned European champions, are at home to Group C whipping boys Bursaspor.

The Turkish side have already been thrashed 4-0 by Valencia and lost 1-0 at Rangers last time out to live up to their billing as the likely fourth-placed finishers in the pool.

The Red Devils are expected to win this one easily and take a firm grip on the group after following up a disappointing opening goalless draw with Rangers with a smash-and-grab 1-0 win in Valencia.

United did lose 1-0 at home to fellow Turkish side Besiktas last season, but Sir Alex Ferguson’s side had already won their group and the veteran Scot had the luxury of naming a severely weakened team for what was a dead rubber.

Meanwhile, Tottenham make a daunting trip to Italy to face the European champions in the cathedral of football that is the San Siro.

Following a cagey opening 2-2 draw with Werder Bremen, the Champions League debutants found their feet with a 4-1 demolition of Dutch side FC Twente on matchday two.

Two goals by Roman Pavlyuchenko and further strikes from Gareth Bale and Rafael van der Vaart have left Spurs second in the Group A table behind Inter and well placed to qualify for the knockout stages.

Should Harry Redknapp’s side take anything from their back-to-back fixtures with the reigning Italian champions then their hopes of reaching the last 16 would be further boosted.

Both clubs are troubled by lengthy injury lists heading into this fixture with Spurs robbed of the services of players of the calibre of Jermain Defoe, Michael Dawson, William Gallas and Aaron Lennon.

However, Redknapp will be hoping another flying start like his side made on matchday one will lead to success. At Bremen last month, they scored twice in the first 18 minutes, eventually drawing 2-2.

A similar scoreline would be greeted like a victory back in north London such is the quality of Wednesday night’s opposition.
