New world number one golfer Lee Westwood is delighted to have taken over at the top of the rankings from Tiger Woods, but is not getting carried away by his new status.

The 37-year-old Englishman was confirmed as number one after Martin Kaymer failed to finish in the top two at the Andalucia Masters.

However, his reign could be short, with this week’s WGC-HSBC Champions event in Shanghai seeing Woods, Kaymer and Phil Mickelson all in with a chance of overtaking Westwood.

“Right at this moment I can show people the world rankings and say I am the best on the planet,” Westwood said.

“It’s confirmation that I’m working on the right things more than anything. This is nothing but a positive thing.”

Kim Clijsters ended her season in style by beating the world number one Caroline Wozniacki to clinch her third WTA Championships in Doha.

The 27-year-old Belgian, who won the US Open last month beat Wozniacki 6-3, 5-7, 6-3. Clijsters, who had previously win the title in 2002 and 2003, always had the edge over the 20-year-old Dane and fully deserved her latest success.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted that he is puzzled by star striker Wayne Rooney’s poor form so far this season.

The 25-year-old England international, who is currently sidelined by an ankle injury, has scored just once for the Red Devils so far this term, but recently put pen to paper on a new five-year contract.

Ferguson told The Sun: “I don’t know the reason for his loss of form because it started in the World Cup.

“Whether some clubs have been filling his head in that period to affect him we don’t know.

“The important thing is for us to put it behind us, but certainly something has been troubling him.”

Flanker Lewis Moody is set to lead England out against New Zealand next weekend after suffering no new injury problems in Bath’s 6-6 draw with Harlequins.

The 32-year-old who has been troubled by an eye problem, needed stitches to a head wound during the clash at The Stoop, but returned to complete the full 80 minutes.

England seamer Stuart Broad has played down a hand injury sustained by team-mate Graeme Swann when facing Tim Bresnan in the opening net session of The Ashes tour Down Under.

Broad told reporters: “He’s fine. It’s just a bit of precautionary strapping.

“I don’t think he’s in any trouble at all. He just got a bit of a blow, which you’re used to in nets.”
