Premier League powerhouses Manchester United are getting ready for a British battle when they travel to Scotland to face Rangers on Wednesday.

With three big Champions League Group C points on the line, the Red Devils will be out to silence the partisan Glasgow crowd this week.

A triumph for Sir Alex Ferguson’s outfit will see them progress through to the knockout stages, but opposite number Walter Smith knows a costly setback is likely to see his team crash out.

United have enjoyed a fine start to the campaign as they remain undefeated in all competitions.

Since the start of November they have grabbed three wins and two draws from five outings and, with a record that reads three victories and a solitary draw in their four Champions League games to date, they are certainly heading in the right direction.

Rangers must be confident ahead of their acid test after back-to-back league successes over Aberdeen (2-0) and at Kilmarnock (3-2).

But they were hammered 3-0 by Valencia on their most recent European outing and only a victory is likely to be good enough to see them progress to the knockout stage of the competition.

Meanwhile, all eyes will be on Tottenham Hotspur when they take on Werder Bremen at White Hart Lane.

The Londoners go into this critical clash at the summit of the Group A table, but manager Harry Redknapp will not be resting on his laurels ahead of this one.

With Inter Milan and FC Twente also in the group, all four teams can still qualify for the last-16.

Spurs are undoubtedly in the driving seat and, with the Germans rooted to the foot of the table on just two points, Werder must win to keep their slim hopes of progressing alive.

Spurs have shone on their debut in Europe’s elite competition. A 2-2 draw against this week’s visitors got their show on the road in matchday one before they battered FC Twente 4-1 in north London.

Gareth Bale’s stunning hat-trick was not enough as they lost 4-3 at Inter Milan, but they gained revenge by hammering the Nerazzurri 3-1 earlier this month and should go into this clash full of confidence.

Bremen picked up points against Spurs and FC Twente, but losses to Inter Milan and the Dutch outfit have left them at the bottom of the table.

Saturday’s disheartening 4-0 Bundesliga setback at Schalke has left Thomas Schaaf’s side in some disarray.
